German-speaking Mennonites from Russia began migrating to Brazil in 1930. They established farm communities, settled in the southern cities, and formed German-speaking congregations. These churches formed the Associaçâo das Igrejas Menonitas do Brasil (AIMB).
North American Mennonites began mission work in Brazil in the 1950s among Portuguese-speaking people, leading to the formation of the Associação Evangélica Menonita (AEM). In 2007, the name was changed to Aliança Evangélica Menonita (AEM) in accordance with a new regional structure.
Junta Menonita de Missões Internacionais (JMMI), for international mission work, was established in1998 by AEM, and Brazilian workers were sent to Mozambique and Albania the following year.
In 2008, JMMI expanded to include work within Brazil, particularly in locations distant from existing congregations, naming this branch of their work PRONAM (Project of National Missions). Mission Network supports the work of JMMI, including PRONAM.
