Overview
Joe and Anna Sawatzky have served with Mennonite Ministries in South Africa (a partnership of Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission [AIMM], Mennonite Church Canada Witness, and Mennonite Mission Network) since 2006. Their primary focus is with Bethany Bible School, a teaching ministry among the African-Initiated Churches (AICs) of Eastern Cape, South Africa.
History
Begun in 1982 when AIMM accepted an invitation from the Transkei Council of Churches (now Eastern Cape Provincial Council of Churches) to work with its member AICs, Bethany Bible School (BBS) conducts quarterly Bible conferences on 24 biblical, theological and ministry topics. In addition, BBS offers three skills-based workshops per year on critical social issues affecting South Africa. Many students lack formal education, and BBS provides affordable, indigenous language, nonresidential, biblical education and leadership training. A nine-member committee, elected at the year-end conference in Mthatha, sets policy and agenda for the school.
