He learned pastoral ministry by doing

When God yanked Norikazu Kanno toward ministry, Kanno could not leave his job at a wholesale market to study, despite the mission workers' encouragement. While the church needed him to lead, his family needed him to provide.

Kanno did both — pastoring Obihiro Mennonite Christian Church while selling food and flowers at a wholesale market.

He learned by doing, and he made mistakes, but he was steady, and he was present, Kanno said. The next generation also will be present.

"We believe that God will supply the necessary next leaders at the right time," he said. "We all need to think that, believe it and pray in that way."
