Joy in a job that matters

Fabiola Flores’ background in Guatemala helped prepare her for work as an assistant in the International Ministries department of Mennonite Mission Network. She has worked almost three years in the Newton, Kan., office. Currently, she serves as administrative assistant for Latin America and East Asia and as prayer-letter coordinator.

Through her work in distributing prayer letters for all the international mission workers, she keeps in touch with God’s work around the world. While many of the prayer letters are sent by e-mail, there is still a need to send hundreds of hard copies through the post office.

"By sharing their prayer letters, I do have a part in their work," Flores said. She is especially touched by the stories mission workers share about their struggles and the people with whom they minister.

"I'm doing something with a purpose. This job actually does matter," she said.

More specifically to Latin America and East Asia, Flores does routine tasks that include translation; processing reimbursement payment requests to mission workers; and data entry of mission workers’ terms, addresses and other information.

"I'm much more of a people person," she said. "My favorite thing is to get to know the workers and relate with them." She especially enjoys hosting mission workers' visits to the Newton office. She adds personal notes of encouragement to routine correspondence with mission workers.

Latin America Director Linda Shelly said, "Since I travel so much, it's very important to have an assistant who can respond and relate with people in both English and Spanish. I know that people will feel encouraged and blessed by herwarm communication. I tell people she is a great detective. If she doesn’t have the information, she will find it. That is important since she fills several roles that include many different aspects."

Flores answers the toll-free Spanish phone line for Mennonite Church USA: 1-877-665-6662. Most of the calls are from people asking where a Mennonite church might be in their area. Some people call regarding the Instituto Bíblico Anabautista, program offered in Spanish for leaders in the Hispanic congregations of Mennonite Church USA.
