Taunts filled Yuko Chan’s world as she limped through life — until she met the pastor of the Shiroishi Mennonite Christ Church in the park on Resurrection Day (Easter) 2004. Yuko had withdrawn into herself to avoid the pain of perpetual ridicule.
But the pastor, who was handing out cakes left over after the congregation’s celebration, struck up a conversation with Yuko and invited her to church.
Yuko accepted the invitation and now attends regularly. Surrounded by the love and acceptance of God’s people, Yuko has blossomed into a young woman eager to contribute her culinary and musical gifts to her church’s ministry. She is studying the Bible and piano with Nobuko Ooyama, the pastor’s wife.
Yuko quickly dons an apron to help with parties the congregation throws for the neighborhood kids, and she plays piano with the worship band. She has captured the missionary spirit and invites her friends to church.
“I really see God working step by step in Yuko’s life,” said Teresa Sherrill. “The Shiroishi church is praying for and supporting her as a seeker.”
Mike and Teresa, along with their three children and Teresa’s mother, serve the Shiroishi Mennonite Christ Church through Mennonite Mission Network with youth activities, Sunday school and preaching. Beyond the congregation, they work with the Hokkaido Mennonite Conference, practice hospitality and teach in a variety of settings, including Hokusei Gaken University.
