Alternative Sentencing Program
Fresno
California
Description:
Caseworkers interview the clients, administer the national Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to indentify individual needs and issues, and gather pertinent police or probation reports. To design appropriate sentencing recommendations, the Caseworker considers 40-50 community-based providers that offer a wide range of treatment, training, and counseling options. If the client is suitable and agreeable, information is presented to the proposed program for review and advance acceptance. Upon acceptance by such programs, ASP then delivers a written recommendation to the client's attorney who, in turn, presents such to the Fresno County Courts. Approximately 130 to 150 clients are referred each month with about 65% receiving a recommendation of an alternative sentence. About 85% of the clients are incarcerated and must be interviewed at a jail. The judges accept 75 to 85% of the ASP recommendations. Transportation to programs can be provided on a fee basis.
