 Supporting congregation

Americus Mennonite Fellowship, started in 1987, is a small but active church with attendance around 35-40. The congregation has a growing relationship with the local Hispanic community, including weekly tutoring sessions and joint activities. Members are involved in other various ministries, both individually and as a whole, such as our local housing organizations, prisoner visitation and advocacy, homeless outreach, international student ministry, the annual Mennonite Relief Sale, and more. We are an informal group, and volunteers are embraced by the church family, some of whom are former MVS volunteers who have made Americus home. There are many ways to get involved. Community
As the only MVS unit located in the deep South, Americus offers an opportunity to live and serve in a small town that is heavily entwined in civil rights history, and still impacted by it. Our community (county population: 32,000) is home to two global housing organizations -- Habitat for Humanity International and the Fuller Center for Housing – and Koinonia Farm, a Christian community striving to “be a demonstration plot for the kingdom of God.”

The MVS unit house is located in a neighborhood that has other volunteer housing, and is within walking distance of historic downtown Americus, restaurants, a coffee shop, parks and recreation areas, biking and running routes, and more. The unit owns a van for transportation.

Americus has a state university, community theater, and opportunities for many different interests. Numerous church and community potlucks help enable the building of strong friendships. Ten miles away is the town of Plains, Ga., the home of President Jimmy Carter, who still teaches Sunday school regularly. Other places to visit include Habitat for Humanity's Global Village and Discovery Center, where visitors can tour sample homes from around the world, and the National Prisoner of War Museum at Andersonville. Nearby outdoor areas include Lake Blackshear and Providence Canyon State Park, a beautiful canyon with hiking trails.

Service
Most volunteers in Americus serve at Habitat for Humanity or the Fuller Center for Housing, although other opportunities are available. Positions include volunteer coordination, communications, cycling and event planning, construction, graphic arts, marketing, human resources, information technology and other areas. Volunteers have also served with Koinonia Farm, Café Campesino (a fair trade coffee roastery and co-op), as well as in education and youth ministries.
