Community
Located on the south side of town, the Harlingen unit house is in a residential neighborhood of brick houses and wide, open spaces. As a border town on the southern border of Texas, Harlingen MVSers can experience the unique blending of Mexican and US American cultures. A largely Latino area, Harlingen offers opportunities to learn more about local culture and arts. MVSers in Harlingen can expect to get to know their neighbors and participate in community activities. Some knowledge of the Spanish language and Latin-American culture is a huge advantage in getting to know the people and culture in this part of the world.
Church
Iglesia Menonita Buenas Nuevas/Good News Mennonite Church in San Juan, TX, is a small, vibrant, diverse, dual-language congregation that supports the Harlingen MVS Unit. There are lots of opportunities to get involved and the church welcomes MVSers enthusiastically. The church is located about 30 minutes away and church services are bilingual English-Spanish.
Service
Originally established as a way to provide workers for assistance programs for Central American refugees, the unit continues to draw people wishing to engage the complex issue of immigration on a deeper level. MVSers have played an important role in legal services provided for detained Central American immigrant children and teenagers as well as detained adults from around the world. Other service assignments have included education, family and social services.
