Unit
Located on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona, the Kykotsmovi MVS unit consists of five houses on the Hopi Mission School grounds that can accommodate up to 10 volunteers. Two of the houses also have guest quarters. The houses are small, but are in better condition than many homes on the reservation, and MVSers are quite comfortable.
Church
There are several churches located on the reservation, and unit members are encouraged to attend the church of their choice. Most of the churches are small, only 10-25 people. On the first Sunday of each month, all the local Hopi and Navajo congregations gather to sing, worship, pray and eat together. Most of the churches are either American Baptist or Mennonite by denomination and have worship styles that are similar to many Anglo churches.
Service
The Kykotsmovi MVS unit is unique in that all members work at Hopi Mission School, the only Christian school on the reservation. The primary role of the MVS unit is to provide education for children in grades K-6. Started in 1951, MVS has been supplying teachers and other volunteers for Hopi Mission School since 1957.
