 Supporting congregations

Two congregations, Seattle Mennonite Church (SMC) and Evergreen Mennonite Church (EMC), support the unit and have members on the support committee. SMC has a congregation of about 125, is located in the North Seattle neighborhood of Lake City, and is deeply involved with the homeless community in that neighborhood. EMC, which grew out of SMC in the early 1990s, is in Kirkland, just east of Seattle across Lake Washington, with around 50 members, and supports Tent City 4 and Head Start. Each congregation places high importance on service, with many individuals working and volunteering in local service agencies as well as in larger Mennonite agencies. While neither congregation is located in close physical proximity to the unit house, there are church members living in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and many church members willingly offer rides to MVSers to church functions, the airport, etc. Both congregations aspire to be safe and supportive communities.

Community
The unit house is an older eight-bedroom house with a large backyard. Past houses have had small gardens or chickens in the backyard; others have simply enjoyed backyard group games.

Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, it has easy access to downtown and the larger Metro area through public transit. Capitol Hill is a large, diverse, eclectic neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to Seattle University, Seattle Central Community College, and Cornish College of the Arts.  It is also where you can find some of Seattle’s most notable attractions, including Volunteer Park, Seattle Asian Art Museum, and Cal Anderson Park. You’ll find coffeehouses and bookstores at every turn.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be right at home in Seattle! Within a two-hour drive, you can enjoy snowy mountains or quiet beaches, depending on which direction you go. Camp Camrec, located near Leavenworth, Wash., is a camp used regularly by both congregations for winter snow camps and other retreats.

Service
The Seattle MVS unit was established in 1968. MVS participants generally serve in human service or environmental agencies that focus on low- or no-income persons and marginalized individuals and families.
