Mennonite Partners in China
China
Participants will have the opportunity to see God at work in the world in fresh ways as they give and receive hospitality. Along with China’s rich cultural history, incredible changes are stretching the fabric of society as cities modernize rapidly and people face new challenges. While the world is learning about China’s economic growth and growing international power, family structures are changing and youth are looking for persons with whom to talk about new ideas and issues. Students are curious about Christian faith, and many have basic questions that provide opportunities for meaningful discussion.
The Radical Journey team will live in the city of Nanchong, which is located in Sichuan province in southwestern China. Participants will be hosted by a small group of local believers who are part of a large church, and several North Americans who serve with the Mennonite Partners in China program.
Participants will be given the opportunity to build relationships, experience the culture, and serve the local church by finding ways to connect with them that may include English teaching. Chinese youth are eager to practice their English and form relationships with native English speakers. Participants will be invited as practice teacher/students to a local medical college and a community language training center where they will gain skills in classroom teaching while interacting with students of various ages from children to adults. Local hosts will provide support and assistance in teaching as necessary. Participants will live with host families. Chinese language classes throughout the year will help participants develop meaningful relationships. Travel to scenic and historical sites as well as cultural workshops will provide greater understanding of Chinese culture and history.
