Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana
Shreveport
Louisiana
The Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana is faith-driven and Christ-centered, and promotes collaborative and innovative partnerships with individuals and organizations in an unrelenting quest to provide adequate housing for families living in poverty and substandard housing. Hurricane Katrina evacuees and local families acquired new homes and new hope as local residents saw a renewal in a community they felt had been forgotten, and an opportunity to own a home instead of renting.
Volunteers perform rehabilitation services for families living at or below the poverty level, and assist with the construction of new homes for qualified applicants. Volunteers may weatherize homes, replace porches, build handicapped ramps, and complete minor roof repair and other projects. Volunteers work side-by-side with the homeowner, which allows individuals to put their faith into action, and creates lasting bonds between the faith-based organizations, volunteers and the homeowners.
Volunteers are welcome year-round.
The climate of north Louisiana has high humidity and mild winters. Shreveport-Bossier has a mixture of shopping, entertainment and cultural experience for visitors. It's a unique combination of two great American heritages - a little Texas, a little Cajun.
Lodging: A volunteer center is located at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The center sleeps 20 in bunkbeds built by volunteers, and has two refrigerators and microwaves for use by the volunteers. There is a cooperative agreement with the church, which allows use of their fellowship hall, which has a full kitchen and can accommodate 160 people.
Typical lodging costs are $20/day, which can be waived.
RV hookup: There is a friendship house that has a 30-amp circuit, and there is one hookup at the volunteer center at the church as well.
