Warm weather is not the only reason SOOP volunteers are attracted to Arizona. In connection with Trinity Mennonite Church, the Phoenix unit has earned a reputation for providing many opportunities for reaching out into the community. Volunteers work in food banks, at a retirement home, as ESL teachers and aides, and help with various repair and remodeling projects. They also assist and interact at Goldensun, a residential program for developmentally challenged adults. Our volunteers enjoy an atmosphere of living and working together. Communal living includes sharing evening meals with other SOOP volunteers and in homes of Trinity church members, visiting local sights, and dining experiences. Our Monday evening meal is normally with the staff and clients of Goldensun.
Coordinators assist with airport transportation, and plan work site locations in line with the interests and abilities of volunteers.
Lodging: Housing is provided in a communal setting at the Phoenix Menno Guest House, a six-bedroom home near Trinity Mennonite Church.
