Overview
From 1985 to 2002, Tenth Man, the church facility-building
program of Mennonite Men in cooperation with one of
our predecessor agencies, the Commission on Home Ministries
(General Conference Mennonite Church), provided grants
of nearly $1 million to support the construction of
more than 40 church buildings in Canada, the United
States or overseas. Now operating under the name JoinHands,
the program invites individuals and groups to contribute
regularly in order to provide grants to congregations
seeking to build their first church meeting house.
Most grants go to urban, racial/ethnic congregations,
and since 1999 a tithe of all grants is set aside
to help build church facilities overseas. Although
grants primarily are for buildings, in special cases
grants may cover seed money for a land purchase.
Mennonite Mission Network participates in this initiative
through participating in connection with congregations
both inside and outside the United States. Mission
Network personnel make recommendations regarding the
applications of international congregations, and participate
in the final processing of overseas grant requests.
They also receive, research, seek counsel for and
recommend U.S. congregations for grants.
