Service
The purpose of the Harlingen MVS
unit is to learn from and serve the people of this
unique, international region with its rich mixture
of culture, language and nationality. The unit was
originally established to help Central American refugees,
many of whom enter the U.S. through the lower Rio
Grande Valley, where Harlingen is located. Recently,
MVS has expanded its focus to include other issues
important to the border, such as education and the
needs of families.
MVSers are asked to relate to the local community,
including but not limited to neighbors, by participating
in local activities such as the Narcisco Martinez
Cultural Arts Center, the Sombrero Fest and La Posada
parties; by reading local papers, talking with locals
and attending community meetings; and by developing
a relationship with the Hispanic churches, including
Primera Iglesia Menonita. MVS assignments have included
teaching English as a second language and working
with refugees under the auspices of various social
service agencies.
Unit
Goals of the Harlingen
MVS unit are to respect each other's differences and
personalities, to be honest and open with each other,
and to listen to and learn from each other. The unit
tries to pray together at least once a week and take
periodic spiritual retreats.
