Akron, PA
Mennonite Central Committee

Service opportunities: Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has several opportunities for volunteers at its offices in Akron, Pa.

  • General maintenance and light housekeeping
  • Painting, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry (experience preferred) on a part-time basis
  • Grounds help is needed March to October to clean flower beds, trim bushes, plant annuals
  • Library assistant, artist/graphic designer, assistant to the MCC hostess and in the MCC store
  • Lodging: Housing is provided without charge in MCC guest housing or apartments within walking distance of the MCC offices. Volunteers can eat lunch Monday through Friday in the MCC dining hall. Kitchens are available in guest housing or apartments where volunteers can prepare their own breakfast, supper, and weekend meals.


    Brownstown, PA
    Ten Thousand Villages Warehouse

    Service opportunities:Volunteers assist at the recently completed Ten Thousand Villages shipping and receiving warehouse located in Brownstown, Pa., a short drive from the home office in Akron. At the warehouse, volunteers in the short-term program (minimum eight weeks) unpack products, pull orders for packing, pack orders for shipment, and/or process items that have been returned. It is physical work and requires the ability to stand and/or walk all day as well as do some bending and lifting. Those who volunteer for fewer than eight weeks assist in the processing room by opening boxes, counting items, checking for damage, and preparing items for inventory. This work also involves standing/walking throughout the time of service, with possibly some bending and lifting as well.

    Lodging:Volunteers who serve less than eight weeks are responsible for their own housing. Ten Thousand Villages can assist with information about lodging options. Volunteers who serve for one eight-hour day will receive a noon meal each day of their service. Volunteers in service for an eight-week/eight-hour-a-day commitment will receive a daily noon meal, a modest stipend, and housing in a small, furnished apartment.


    Harrisburg, PA
    Paxton Ministries

    Service opportunities: Paxton Street Home provides low-cost housing and a caring atmosphere for up to 90 residents, most of whom struggle with mental illness or mental retardation. Volunteers help in the kitchen, with maintenance, housekeeping and activities with residents.

    Lodging: Housing provided or arranged. Three meals per day are provided. Donations for meals and housing are accepted, but not required. Opportunities are available year round.


    Mt. Bethel, PA
    Tuscarora Inn

    Service opportunities: Located in the rolling hills of the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania, Tuscarora Inn is just a few miles off I-80 near the Delaware Water Gap. This peaceful setting of 27 acres surrounded by orchards provides a facility for small group retreats. Opportunities for service are maintenance, landscaping, library and housekeeping.

    Lodging: Accommodation is provided in motel-like units that have cooking and refrigerator units. Volunteers are needed in the fall, winter and spring.


    Mt. Pleasant, PA
    Laurelville Mennonite Church Center

    Service Opportunities: Laurelville Mennonite Church Center is a conference and retreat center in the Laurel Mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania. The facilities are available year-round to churches, synagogues, schools, service clubs and families. Summer programs bring single-parent families, Association of Retarded Citizens, developmentally disabled persons and other diverse groups. Volunteers have the opportunity to serve guests in our dining hall, work in the kitchen and do maintenance or housekeeping. Laurelville welcomes volunteers any time of the year but help is most valuable in the summer and fall.

    Lodging: Housing and meals are provided. Several RV sites are also available.


    Souderton, PA
    Care and Share Shoppes

    Service opportunities: Care and Share Shoppes, Inc. includes four stores at one location which benefit Mennonite Central Committee. There are three thrift stores: Clothing (shoes, jewelry and clothing); Variety (housewares, books and toys); and Furniture (including small appliances). The Ten Thousand Villages store next door carries new handcrafted items from 32 different developing countries. Volunteers are needed in all four stores to cashier, sort, price, and stock shelves. The complex of stores provides a fun, relational center volunteer activity within the Souderton Shopping Center along with other businesses, stores and a conference center – all within easy access to Philadelphia.

    Lodging: Assistance with finding affordable lodging may be requested.


    Canadensis, PA
    Spruce Lake Retreat

    Service opportunities: Spruce Lake Retreat and Wilderness Camp operates year-round programs "pointing people toward Christ" in the picturesque Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania. A wide variety of short and longer-term voluntary opportunities exist. There is need for assistance of persons skilled in trades - construction, plumbing, painting, and grounds maintenance. Bookkeeping, accounting and office skills are also in demand. Many older enjoy short-term service opportunities in food services, lodging, and hospitality in this cozy retreat setting.

    Lodging: We are pleased to provide gratis lodging and meal packages to volunteers, including housing, camping, and/or RV sites and hook-ups, as needed.


    Ephrata, PA
    Woodcrest Retreat

    Service opportunities: Woodcrest Retreat is a member of the Mennonite Camping Association located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We minister to 1,000+ children through summer camp while our RV campground provides opportunities for weekend family and church retreats. Campground hosts are needed for weekends with a flexible mid-week schedule. Variety of duties include welcoming guests, cleaning, light maintenance, office duties, operating the camp store and the waterslide, etc. Volunteers needed for the summer/fall months. A minimum of one month commitment.

    Lodging: RV sites available, or we will provide a camper.


    Quarryville, PA
    Black Rock Retreat

    Service opportunities: Black Rock Retreat is located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania approximately one and a half hours west of Philadelphia and one and a half hours north of Baltimore, MD. It is a non-profit Christian facility primarily providing retreat facilities for use by Christian churches and organizations. Volunteers are needed for construction projects, playground and picnic table upkeep and routine camp duties such as leaf-raking, mowing, etc.

    Lodging: Lodging available in motel-like rooms, cottages, or cabins, all with private showers. Meals are provided.
