Migrant Farmworkers Assistance Fund -- Kansas City, Kansas

  • Join a small team of migrant advocates providing direct service and accompaniment to migrant and seasonal farmworkers living in rural orchard labor camps.
  • Gain exposure and advocacy training in a wide variety of professional settings: medical, legal, social services, education, rural poverty issues.
  • Provide labor camp outreach to migrant farmworkers and their families, mostly Mexican and Mexican-American.
  • Provide advocacy, interpretation and transportation to medical and other appointments.
  • Assist with case management for farmworkers and their families to respond to health care, education and emergency service needs.
  • Interpret in legal, school and medical contexts (if desired by MVS volunteer.)
  • Co-coordinate and assist with MFAF's family and youth enrichment, leadership, community building programs for farmworkers and their families.
  • Assist with children and adult education programs, including tutoring, GED, ESL, health education, Women's Group and summer education and leadership programs.
  • File notes and office work at small office in midtown Kansas City.
  • Work in a small, energetic, fun team in our office in midtown Kansas City; co-workers are social-justice minded, active in local community activities and have diverse backgrounds and musical and food interests!

Qualifications:

Start in the position, for orientation, no later than July 15

Enjoy direct service with people, getting to know them well and know their families and stories.
Mature and self-motivating.
Flexible.
Enjoy working with a team.
Fluency in Spanish is helpful, but not required.
Willing to work irregular hours (during the August through October migrant apple harvest season).
Must have a valid US driver's license and good driving record.
Experience with Latinos in the U.S. is helpful, but not required.
Interest in learning more about migrant farmworkers in the U.S.
