Options in Community Living is a supported living agency for people with developmental disabilities. Founded in 1981, Options mission is to support people with developmental disabilities to live full lives as members of our community. Options strives to provide the assistance needed to help people live the life they choose. We are limited by available funding and our creativity. Options currently supports 104 individuals ranging in age from 20 to 84.

A Community Builder assists in forming meaningful relationships between people with developmental disabilities and community members. Historically, many people with disabilities have been excluded from community life through placement in institutions or other means of segregation. Options' mission is to assist people to become active community members. Creating opportunities for our community to include people with disabilities decreases isolation and enriches community life for all.

Community Builders work directly with Options staff to: raise public awareness about the contributions and gifts of people with disabilities; develop and support relationships between people with disabilities and community members and places; and identify the interests, talents and aspirations of people supported by Options. The central role of this position is to help our community and people Options supports find value in sharing community life.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist individuals to develop and expand participation in community activities and to build relationships with community members, family, friends, and neighbors.
  • Pursue a variety of strategies including, but not limited to: connecting people with businesses, religious institutions, clubs, and organizations; developing volunteer opportunities in the community; networking with friends, family, neighbors, associates and community members; interviewing community members and organizations to develop community building strategies and opportunities.
  • Work with the Dane County Timebank to involve Timebank volunteers in the lives of people supported, and to help people supported make contributions to others via the Timebank.
  • Innovate and experiment to broaden and deepen the range of community opportunities available to individuals supported by Options.
  • Explore the interests and desires of the person being supported.
  • Organize and participate in presentations and meetings about community building activities to assist others to understand the role of community building and its necessity in the lives of people Options supports.
  • Maintain flexibility in scheduled work hours to maximize availability for community activities.
  • Position could be full or part-time.

Interest in learning about the capacities and needs of people with disabilities; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with Options staff; ability to provide leadership in the area of community building; ability to take risks, ask of others, and be open-minded about differences of all kinds; ability to connect with a variety of people in a variety of settings; ability to establish relationships with people with disabilities, their families, and community members that are based on mutual respect and recognition of each person's ability to contribute.
