I love working with the dedicated, multicultural staff at Briya. I have a wide variety of different duties, which allows me to get to know students and staff from all over the world. <br>-former volunteer
<b>Primary Job Responsibilities:</b>
<li>Assist Computer Instructor to prepare and teach computer classes for adult English-language learners. Assist in classes of typing, using software or web-based programs such as Typing Instructor, Typing-Web, etc.</li>
<li>Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as teacher-led instruction or demonstrations and student-led group activities.</li>
<li>Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.</li>
<li>Use computers, laptops, iPads, Smart board, & other equipment and materials for class presentations. </li>
<li>Maintain competence in creating presentations, using the internet, computer navigation, and word processing skills.</li>
The volunteer will have the opportunity to interact with a multicultural, bilingual staff and student body daily. The volunteer will work with diverse adults who are learning English and will have the opportunity to interact with their children, depending on the interests of the volunteer. The volunteer will have a mixture of classroom, tutoring and administrative duties depending on his/her interests and skills.
<b>Fulfilling Aspects of Position:</b><br>
The volunteer will have the opportunity to learn from and share with families from all over the world. She or he will be able to further develop teaching and Spanish language skills and learn about the variety of issues facing immigrant families. The volunteer will gain valuable experience in working with adults and children and in administrative duties related to adult education and non-profit organizations. The volunteer will provide a key service to a vibrant, family-literacy-focused school.
<b>Challenging Aspects of Position: </b><br>
The volunteer will interact with families with varying levels of English language ability and computer skills, diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, and diverse and often limited formal educational experiences. The volunteer will interact with adults who are learning English, using language and activities appropriate to students' abilities.
<li>Bachelor's degree preferred</li>
<li>Teaching experience preferred</li>
<li>Excellent communication skills in English required and Spanish preferred.</li>
<li>Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills. </li>
<b>Training Provided: </b>
The volunteer will receive training in the national CASAS assessment system and adult education curriculum and theory. The volunteer may also attend additional trainings of particular need or interest to him or her.
