Social Services Advocatehttps://www.mennonitemission.net/Serve/placements/mennonite voluntary service/United States/538644/Social Services AdvocateSocial Services AdvocateJustice and Diversity Center<p> <u>Responsibilities</u>: Assist the Director of Social Services in developing services for and delivering services to clients who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. These responsibilities could include the following: <ol> <li>interviewing, making assessments, and advocating on behalf of clients for services for which they are eligible for and/or have been unfairly denied or delayed in receiving;</li> <li>making referrals to appropriate community resources, including homeless shelters, emergency housing, subsidized housing, public benefits, job training, employment, health care providers, mental health centers, substance abuse treatment, and related programs;</li> <li>attending and participating in staff meetings and community meetings and developing linkages with other service providers; </li> </ol> </p> <div class="ExternalClassE87B0C29444C4FF3B539A47F22CEA053"><p> <u>Skills/experience/qualifications</u>: <ol> <li>Possession of a bachelor's degree, or higher, in social work, sociology, psychology, or a closely related field.</li> <li>An interest in and an understanding of the causation of homelessness in America from an economic/political perspective.</li> <li>A sincere desire to assist the homeless population. </li> <li>Fluency in Spanish will be helpful, but is not required.</li> </ol> </p><p> <u>Client knowledge</u>:<br> The Social Services Advocate will become educated and informed about the lives of clients who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless by: <ol> <li>conducting intake interviews at HAP;</li> <li>making psychosocial assessments as needed;</li> <li>providing services, making referrals, and serving as a client advocate;</li> <li>developing a working relationship with clients at HAP or VLSP's downtown office.</li> <li>keeping abreast of current social, political, economic, and psychological perspectives as they relate to homelessness.</li> </ol> </p> </div>
