Catholic Migration Services ("CMS") is a nonprofit legal services provider, whose mission is to serve and empower low-income immigrants in Brooklyn and Queens, regardless of religion, national origin, or ethnicity. CMS has 501(c)(3) status and is an affiliate of Catholic Charities of Brooklyn & Queens and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.
Since its founding in 1971, CMS has helped tens of thousands of immigrants adjust their immigration status, obtain asylum, become naturalized citizens, and receive other forms of immigration relief. CMS also offers housing legal services to low-income tenants and workers' rights legal services to low-wage workers. In addition to direct legal services, all three of CMS' legal programs hold outreach events to provide know-your-rights education to low-income immigrants at sites dispersed throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
The volunteer will become part of our naturalization team, which in 2018 helped over 600 lawful permanent residents apply for and become U.S. citizens. The volunteer will interview potential clients on designated intake days, record relevant information in case management software, screen for possible relief, and participate in meetings to determine whether CMS can or should provide legal representation or other services to the client. The volunteer will also conduct follow-up work and prepare naturalization applications under the supervision of an attorney. The volunteer is expected to work full time and will be assigned to work different days in our two offices (Sunnyside, Queens and downtown Brooklyn), as needed. The volunteer will also be assigned to work at naturalization workshops, which may be held in collaboration with other organizations in New York City.
Bachelor's degree; conversational ability in Spanish is preferred. Other language skills may be considered.
