|SOOP San Antonio||https://www.mennonitemission.net/Serve/placements/soop/United States/140070/SOOP San Antonio||SOOP San Antonio||The SOOP Program in San Antonio, TX is similar to the church it comes from, San Antonio Mennonite Church. SAMC is a small (50-60 folks), close-knit and diverse community. We often gather together to celebrate special events, bring meals to new parents, cheer on someone's sports event, etc. SAMC is closely involved with immigrants from the nearby detention center. Service opportunities include working at La Casa de Maria y Marta (The Mary Martha House), doing maintenance work, deep cleaning the guest house and hosting groups/people. Other options are community-based, serving food and helping at food pantries, tutoring, helping with emergency assistance, and others. Although SOOP work can't always be easily measured by hours or 'product', we plan for about 20 hours a week of service work. San Antonio is full of incredible and compassionate agencies, culture, and great places to explore. The hope is that SOOP stretches, teaches, builds community, and offers meaningful service possibilities. Lodging: One camper hook up available in the church parking lot. La Casa de Maria y Marta (The Mary Martha House), located at 602 Mission St., San Antonio, TX, 78210, is 3 blocks from church and 2 blocks from the San Antonio river. Throughout the year, immigrants are offered housing as they transition from the detention center. The space may also be used for youth groups, retreats, meetings, or even for house guests. SOOPers live in some of the bedrooms, sharing common space with each other and the other guests. There is a suggested donation of $40 a week for singles and $60 a week for couples to cover housing costs. La Casa is 2 blocks away from the bus line (bus passes are $35 or $19.50 for those 62 and older). There is no land line so cell phones are encouraged. Wireless service allows for laptop usage. The January-March weather can vary-sometimes with cold nights (30's) and sometimes even cold days, though days are often warm with temperatures in the 60-70 degree range.
