Advent devotional

Ver versión en español

This Advent devotional comes from Devocionales 2022-2023, a book of devotionals produced by the Movimiento de Mujeres Anabautistas Haciendo Teología desde América Latina (MTAL — Movement of Anabaptist Women doing Theology from Latin America) The daily devotionals can also be found on Facebook.

“... For the Mighty One has done great things for me; holy is God’s name!” Luke 1:49 (VOICE)

Mary left us the example of a heart full of gratitude. Through her prophetic words, we perceive Mary’s acknowledgement of the great works that God performs in the lives of those who seek him. This young girl recognizes the favor of God in her life.

Sometimes it is easier to complain, especially to grumble, without being satisfied with what that we have received. God has stretched out God’s hands and blessed us greatly; but we always want more. We need to learn from Mary and have a heart of gratitude in the smallest things. “Are we to accept the good that comes from God, but not accept the bad?” (Job 2:10)

With such an understanding, Mary was not only thankful, but she also worshiped God saying, “Holy is God’s name” (Luke 1:49). This demonstrates the level of intimacy that Mary had with God. Intimacy comes from trust. So, if we trust in God, we will be sure that He will take care of us down to the smallest details of our lives, never abandoning us, “because God is energizing you so that you will desire and do what always pleases Him.” (Philippians 2:13)

Mary knew the importance of worship; we see it when she sang a song filled with the Holy Spirit: “My soul lifts up the Lord! My spirit celebrates God, my Liberator!” (Luke 1:46-47)

Like Mary, we must recognize what God has done for us, and with a heart full of gratitude, worship God for every achievement and victory received; yet we worship not only in gratitude for benefits, but also in praise of who God is when we demonstrate our love, trust, and devotion.

Let us pray:

God, help us to have a grateful heart that praises your name and recognizes you even in the smallest details of our lives.

Aprendiendo a alabar a Dios
