Chris Scott, Facilitator for Emerging Faith Communities, shares his passion for church planting within the Mennonite/Anabaptist tradition as a timely response to today’s cultural challenges — including the decline of traditional institutions.
He highlights how Anabaptist theology offers valuable insights on shalom (peace and wholeness), community, justice, and faithful living that the church can proclaim and embody in the current moment. Scott expresses church planting as a way to invite people into justice, genuine connection, and discerning God’s call.
His primary goal is to help build a “culture of call” across Mennonite Church USA and partner groups, making it clear that involvement in new or emerging faith communities is a real and accessible option for people.
To achieve this, he plans to collaborate closely with conference ministers, equipping them to identify potential church planters, mentor them, coach them, and walk alongside them. He stresses healthy practices like team-based leadership (rather than solo efforts) and keeping emerging works connected to existing congregations for mutual learning and support.
