Mennonite Mission Network has a longstanding partnership with the Ghana Mennonite Church (GMC), an independent Anabaptist denomination in Ghana and a member of Mennonite World Conference. This connection is rooted in shared values of peace, community, service, and faithful discipleship.
In 1955, Ghanaian leader George Thompson encountered Mennonites at a conference in Europe. He was baptized the following year and commissioned to establish a Mennonite church in Ghana. Starting under Ghanaian leadership in the late 1950s (primarily in southern regions), the church grew with support from the Mennonite Board of Missions — a predecessor organization to Mennonite Mission Network. Resident missionaries from the Board collaborated with GMC for about 30 years, helping establish and nurture the young denomination.
The church currently is composed of 29 congregations in multiple regions of the country with a total baptized membership at around 5,000.
Mission Network maintains an ongoing partnership with GMC, characterized by relational support, collaboration, and a focus on leadership development rather than direct church planting or large-scale missionary presence.
MMN also supports related theological education efforts in Ghana, such as partnerships with Good News Theological Seminary (which trains leaders from various African Initiated Churches, including those influenced by Mennonite connections).
