Keeping the Honeymoon Alive After the Children Come Along

Couples are very often surprised by how much they argue after the happy event of the birth of a child, says marriage counselor Carol Lindquist, author of the book, "The Happy Couple Handbook."

Lindquist is the guest on this week’s Shaping Families program from Third Way Media. She says that 66 percent of couples are not only less happy after the birth of their first child, the most difficult years of parenting overall are when their kids are between two and five years old.

A therapist for over 30 years and a trainer of marriage therapists, Lindquist is a board certified clinical psychologist with numerous published journal articles as well as an earlier book, "Happily Married With Kids."

Younger parents—such as teenagers—as well as being older parents have a more difficult time raising children, says Lindquist. She and her husband attest to the difficulty older parents experience in raising children. She lives in Laguna Beach, Calif., where she and her husband raised two sons.

The website for Shaping Families will feature additional links for marriage and parenting resources for families.

The weekly 15-minute Shaping Families program is now airing each weekend on 17 local stations and online at www.ShapingFamilies.com, produced by Third Way Media on behalf of Mennonite Churches through Mennonite Mission Network.
