Dr. Brian Kelley, chair of the psychology department at Bridgewater (Va.) College, is the guest on the Shaping Families radio program Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 in a two-part series on the effects of alcohol and drugs on the adolescent brain.

Kelley has conducted years of research on how alcohol and drugs affect the brain, especially in an adolescent who is still growing. The first program in the series looks at the effects on the brain, and the second focuses on how to curb underage drinking and drug use in teens.

Kelley, the father of four and a Church of the Brethren youth leader, has also helped produce an educational video addressing the neurological effects of underage drinking on the adolescent brain.

Educated at Geneva (Pa.) College, Kelley received his Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. He completed a post doctoral medical research fellowship in psychiatry with the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He has been chair of Bridgewater’s psychology department for most of the last 11 years and has written dozens of journal articles and reviews and  has provided expert witness testimony regarding pharmacology, psychology and psychiatry. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to drugs and “Just Say No” programs.
