Aliança Evangélica Menonita (AEM) is an alliance of around 40 Portuguese-speaking churches in six regions.
Mission workers from predecessor agencies, Commission on Overseas Mission and Mennonite Board of Missions, worked together with Brazilian German and Portuguese-speaking Mennonites in the development of AEM. Mennonite Mission Network supports the leadership development and mission involvements of AEM.
The AEM churches are in ten states and include about 3,000 members. Among the distinctive gifts that AEM has identified are community ministries, counseling, creation of evangelical music, and choreography.
In 1998, AEM organized JMMI (Junta de Missões Menonitas Internacionais) for international mission work, and currently supports Brazilian workers in Albania. At the Mennonite World Conference Assembly in Zimbabwe in 2003, Brazilians were among those who organized a meeting of Portuguese speakers – a first-time event.
In 2015 Mennonite Women USA led a Sister Care seminar in Curitiba. This led to the formation of a team of women that has taken the original Sister Care seminar to all the regions of AEM, and has continued to develop workshops on additional themes. By 2024 these workshops had been shared with approximately 1,500 women. Plans are in process to establish a Sister Care Brazil team in each of the Regions the AEM.
