Position summary

This position with the Adult & Workforce Education Programs is a great opportunity to gain experience in the field of education and in nonprofit administration. Your time will be divided between classroom hours and time spent supporting the program with administrative tasks. You will have the opportunity to work directly with our adult education students in any of a variety of classes: English language acquisition, GED prep, basic literacy, and/or basic computer skills. You will receive training in adult education best practices, and join one of our teaching teams to provide classroom instruction. This position also supports program administration with data, communications, and other tasks. Other opportunities may include working with job seekers through the local One Stop employment center, assisting with drop-in computer and employment tutoring, coordinating access and distribution of laptops, coaching job seekers, or tutoring basic reading and writing skills 1:1.

Job responsibilities

The Program Assistant will:

  • Work as an integral member of the Literacy Connects’ AWE team to deliver high-quality basic literacy, English language acquisition, digital skills, workforce readiness, and/or GED preparation instruction to adult learners at various locations around Tucson and online via Zoom.
  • Teach or assist (as ready) in 1-2 classes and/or tutor 1:1. Responsibilities include: creating class materials and lesson plans, facilitating, individual tutoring and other duties as needed. Training and continuing education are provided.
  • Assist in the coordination and delivery of special projects and classes for adult students in collaboration with community partners.
  • Provide administrative support (e.g., student registration, data entry, record-keeping, communications)

Educational requirements: High school equivalency or higher required; background or interest in community education, literacy, adult learning preferred

Other requirements: Ability to pass background check; comfort with and willingness to learn various technologies; enjoys people, is collaborative and self-motivated; bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred; excellent communication and customer service skills; experience with Google Suite applications, Zoom, and/or Salesforce.

Typical schedule: The majority of hours will be during the normal workday (M-F 9:00-5:00); however, the schedule may be adjusted if the volunteer is teaching/tutoring in an evening class. Occasional weekend hours with advanced notice.
