This pilgrimage immerses you in the profound and resilient struggle for freedom waged by enslaved individuals against the brutal chattel slavery system that sought to strip them of their dignity and humanity. Despite unimaginable hardship, they refused to surrender their spirit, clinging to hope as a lifeline and boldly envisioning a future beyond bondage. This pilgrimage delves deeply into their relentless pursuit of emancipation, exploring the diverse paths — both literal and figurative — they carved out in defiance of oppression.
We’ll shine a particular light on the vital role of faith and faith communities, who stood as beacons of courage and compassion, offering sanctuary, support, and practical aid to those escaping enslavement. From hidden networks of safe houses to the spiritual strength drawn from shared belief, these communities played an indispensable part in the journey to freedom.
This transformative experience begins in Washington, D.C., a city rich with historical significance. We will take in several sites along the Harriet Tubman byway in Maryland, hear from historians and local storytellers, and reflect together on the enduring lessons of resilience and solidarity. Join us as we trace the footsteps of those who risked everything for liberation, connecting their legacy to today’s ongoing work for justice.
