Imagine leading a Service Adventure unit in Anchorage, Alaska, and witnessing young adults grow in surprising ways. Michael Oyer, a unit leader, shares the story of one participant who found new experiences riding a bus.
This participant arrived from a small town in the lower 48, very uneasy by Anchorage’s size and their first ever bus commute to her service placement. Michael rode with them those first times, helping them to navigate the bus schedule. But fast-forward to spring, something changed. Towards the end of what was an emotional year of service, they told the group, “I’m going to miss my commute on the bus. I’m going to miss the people I met — the workers, the folks experiencing homelessness — the conversations we had and learning to ride public transportation were transformational.” The bus, of all things, had become the bridge to a wider world.
