1975
February 16, 1975, marked the founding of the Iglesia Evangélica Menonita Boliviana (Bolivian Mennonite Evangelical Church – IEMB) with the first baptisms held among emerging church groups. Fifty years later, on February 16, 2025, nearly 700 members from twelve established churches and three church plants gathered to commemorate their rich history, celebrate their shared faith, and look forward to a vibrant future.
The IEMB’s journey began with the dedicated efforts of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) workers who arrived in Bolivia to work in agriculture, health, and education, and to foster spiritual growth. Through grassroots Bible study groups, they planted the seeds of what would become a thriving network of congregations. These early efforts were bolstered by the collaboration of predecessor agencies of Mission Network, which provided vital support through mission workers hailing from both South and North America. This cross-continental partnership not only strengthened the IEMB’s foundation but also embodied a spirit of unity and shared purpose.
2025
The 50th anniversary celebration was a vibrant reflection of the IEMB’s growth and impact. Held in Los Tajibos, Santa Cruz, the event brought together generations of believers, from founding members to new members, all united in gratitude and hope. Among the honored guests were early mission workers Beatriz Barrios from Uruguay and Steven “Tig” Intagliata from the United States, whose presence served as a living bridge between the IEMB’s humble beginnings and its present vitality. Their stories of perseverance and faith inspired attendees, reminding them of the sacrifices and dedication that shaped the church.
The milestone event was marked by a heartfelt ceremony. Linda Shelly, Mission Network’s Director for Latin America, presented certificates to recognize the contributions of the congregations, offering words of greeting and blessing that resonated deeply with the gathered community. The event was filled with worship, shared meals, and storytelling, as members recounted milestones and miracles that have defined the IEMB’s journey over five decades.
