Menno Village is a food and agricultural initiative of Mennonite churches in Hokkaido. We are involved in peace education around issues of structural violence in the food system and providing living alternatives through our work with farmers and grassroots people in creating an economy of caring rooted in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Our education work is centered around a project called My Regenerative Journey and a cover crop seed business called Maoi Cover Seed.
We are presently building a sacred space called Hitsuji (Sheep) House which will be used for worship, retreats and education. We would invite volunteers to join us in the work of building this house. Already the foundation has been completed. Construction of the building will begin in April 2026. We hope to raise the shell of the building by Fall. The building will be insulated with sheep wool insulation which will be made with an industrial carding machine. Volunteers who have skills in carpentry or are willing to help are welcome.
Volunteers would also participate in the daily prayer and food life of Menno Village, which includes growing and preparing food, eating together, and cleaning up after meals. Although efforts will be made to train people in tasks it is critical that volunteers be prepared to work independently at times, requiring minimal supervision or guidance. Hours are approximately 30 hours per week. Opportunities to experience Japanese culture, to worship with the Mennonite churches in Sapporo, and other personal activities on the weekends round out this experience. SOOP volunteers are responsible for travel costs.
Lodging: Housing provided at Menno Village. Contributions of $200 per couple per week are requested for these accommodations.
