Every organization has a purpose; an answer to the deceptively simple question, “Why?” At Mennonite Mission Network, that “why?” is to lead, mobilize and equip the church to participate in holistic witness to Jesus Christ — across the street, all through the marketplaces and around the world.
In this Q&A series, Mission Network asks staff members to think about the role they play in the agency, and how they see their daily work joining into what God is doing around the world.
Lee Penner reflects on his role as Network Systems Administrator.
What brought you to your role with Mission Network?
I was under a partial job furlough in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic when Ben Regier said, “You should come work for us!” I wasn’t really looking but thought I should investigate; especially since my parents met in MVS (Mennonite Voluntary Service), and had a strong influence on my service minded, actionable faith.
What is your favorite part of your role with Mission Network?
The people — those who serve and partner with us and our amazing staff of caring brothers and sisters. It is their faith expressed within their context and work that inspires me. My life and faith have been enriched by their stories and presence.
How has your perspective on your role with Mission Network changed over your time with the agency?
Here, I will refer to the previous question. As I engage and listen to the contextual faith stories of my colleagues, my perspective has widened. My role touches many of the Mennonite agencies around the globe. I did not anticipate how much I would learn or experience the illumination of blind spots. I see my role as being part of something bigger than 1s and 0s.
How do you view your role with Mission Network fitting into God’s mission for the church?
My role is to partner in tooling us up for the work we’ve been given. I endeavor to give of my knowledge freely and utilize my gifts in technology to empower [employees’] work. Also, to continue to keep up with the ever-changing technology to this end.
What is something that has surprised you about your role with Mission Network?
Again, God through His people have inspired me! I started here during COVID — that was hard. Through the communications tools, Zoom and Teams, we connected, despite the viral storm. Whether by COVID or cyber-attacks, we are not spared from adversity. However, through the power of God and His people, mercy, care, compassion, prayer, and encouragement have meant everything to me.
