Marian Esther Hostetler, 94, of Goshen, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at Greencroft of Goshen.

Born on February 9, 1932, in Orrville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harry Mervin Hostetler and Esther Ellen Hostetler. Marian lived a life marked by deep Christian faith, service, creativity and generosity.

A dedicated Mennonite mission worker, Marian served in Algeria from 1961 to 1970 during the final years of the Algerian War and the early days of independence. She considered this period the highlight of her life. There, she taught English as a second language, provided religious education for girls, and mentored women in sewing skills to help them earn an income. Her commitment to cross-cultural understanding, women’s and girls’ education, and bridge-building remained central themes throughout her life.

Marian was also an accomplished author. She wrote youth fiction with international and peace-oriented themes, as well as a nonfiction book documenting the experiences and challenges of mission workers in Algeria during the 1950s–1970s.

Between periods of mission service, she taught elementary school for 18 years at Concord Community Schools in Elkhart, Indiana. A lifelong learner, she later took up painting and created numerous works for family and friends, including two large wall murals.

Marian donated her extensive collection of slides — capturing her service and travels in places such as Algeria, Benin, Carthage, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Cyprus, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, the Hopi Nation, India, Israel, Kenya, Lebanon, Nepal, Somalia and Syria — to the Mennonite Archival Information Database.
