Described as the most powerful tropical cyclone this year, Typhoon Ragasa began forming Sept. 17 then moved through northern Luzon, the largest and most populous island in the Philippines. It ravaged Hualien County in Taiwan Sept. 22, before continuing to Hong Kong, Macau and dissipating in southern China and Vietnam, Sept. 25. It has caused extensive flooding and landslides in the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Matai’an Creek Barrier Lake in Hualien County overflowed Sept. 22 with 28 inches of rainfall, which flooded villages and destroyed bridges. At least 14 people died; 152 people were missing at the time Evelyn Chiu, a hospital administrator, corresponded with Mennonite Mission Network.

Evelyn wrote: “Many residents lost their homes, and some even lost their lives. Despite the roads being cut off, Mennonite Christian Hospital remained committed to disaster relief, working with dedication to provide medical care and essential support for those affected. We have been deeply engaged in the relief work these days, and we sincerely look forward to your prayers. We set up a medical station at the church in Matai’an Village to provide care for the disaster-affected residents. This reminds us of the very founding purpose of Mennonite Christian Hospital!”

Please lift up the medical personnel and staff at Mennonite Christian Hospital (p. 21 in Mission Mosaic) as they endure grueling hours at relief stations in the areas of greatest damage. Pray for their stamina, wisdom and protection against any further hazards. May they share Jesus’ love through their acts of healing and service.
