Serve: Joining the crucial work of our neighbors

We equip and mobilize congregations to participate in God’s reconciling work across North America. Rooted in Anabaptist values of peace, justice, and reconciliation, our programs and initiatives empower individuals, youth, and communities to live out Jesus’ teachings through service, faith formation, and advocacy.

Our 81 workers and participants serving in the U.S. and internationally are transforming community social systems related to health, education, immigration, housing, and more. Our North American programs invite individuals and congregations to step into God’s mission, embodying Jesus’ call to peace and justice. These programs are designed to help individuals step out of systems of injustice and into Christ-centered service:

Service programs

Just Peace Pilgrimage

These short-term learning experiences for church groups, families, and individuals, focus on themes like immigration, civil rights, and solidarity with Indigenous peoples.

Mennonite Voluntary Service (MVS)

Age 20+

The program places participants in grassroots nonprofits across the United States, addressing critical issues such as immigration, housing, medical care, education, and water rights. MVS participants live in intentional communities, serve alongside local organizations, and engage with host congregations, preparing them for leadership in churches and communities.

Service Adventure

Age 17–20

This 10-month program combines service with faith formation. Participants live in community, serve at local nonprofits, and build relationships with host congregations. Service Adventure empowers young people to explore their faith and purpose while addressing community needs.

SOOP (Service Opportunities with Our Partners)

25+

SOOP offers flexible short- and long-term service opportunities across North America. Participants use their skills—whether teaching children, working in libraries, or applying carpentry expertise. SOOP is ideal for individuals and families seeking to serve in diverse, meaningful ways.

Peacebuilding and justice programs

Our work in North America emphasizes a holistic witness that integrates peace, justice, and social transformation with faith. Our initiatives address systemic issues and promote reconciliation:

Advocacy and support for marginalized communities

We partner with organizations to provide sanctuary and support for vulnerable immigrants, including legal orientation and administrative roles.

Antiracism and diversity

We are committed to dismantling systemic inequities, fostering mutuality and humility in all partnerships. Our approach, described as “witness as with-ness,” ensures that we walk alongside communities as equals, learning from diverse cultural contexts and amplifying marginalized voices.

Nurturing peace churches

We support congregations and individuals in living out their faith through education, leadership development, and community-building.

Peace and reconciliation training

Through workshops and curricula, we equip congregations and leaders to address conflict and promote nonviolence.

Relational ministry in action

Our work in North America is grounded in relational, non-hierarchical partnerships with Mennonite Church USA’s 15 area conferences, over 460 congregations, and various nonprofits. By prioritizing mutual learning, we ensure that our work reflects the diverse needs and gifts of the communities we serve.
