Mobilizing African churches

Partnering with local faith for deeper Gospel impact

Mennonite Mission Network’s work across the African continent highlights a powerful shift in mission strategy — one that prioritizes partnership over planting new denominational churches.

Instead of establishing new Mennonite congregations, we come alongside African Initiated Churches (AICs) and African Independent Churches. This collaborative vision has produced meaningful, sustainable dividends.

  • Contextual empowerment: When local believers are equipped to serve within their own cultural settings, transformation happens naturally and authentically.
  • Accessible Bible engagement: People can read Scripture, develop hermeneutical skills, and communicate the gospel in ways their communities truly understand.
  • Organic church growth: The good news of Jesus spreads as people build genuine relationships with Christ in the contexts they know best.

“When people are empowered to work within their contexts, that’s a big thing. … The gospel can grow and people can develop a relationship with Jesus Christ within the context that they know.”

Sibonokuhle Ncube, Regional Director for Africa and Europe

This approach demonstrates the power of humility in mission: walking with existing movements of the Spirit rather than imposing external structures. The result is deeper, more culturally resonant discipleship and lasting impact for the Kingdom.

Why this matters

In a diverse continent with vibrant, rapidly growing Christian communities, supporting and strengthening what God is already doing proves both wise and fruitful. This model offers valuable lessons for mission work worldwide.
