Michael Oyer’s journey with Service Adventure began when he transitioned from a teaching career to become a unit leader for the Service Adventure unit in Anchorage, Alaska. Now, he’s Mission Network’s Program Director for Service Adventure.
In this video, he shares his unique perspective on unit leadership and the profoundly rewarding opportunity it offered to invest in both the lives of young adults during a pivotal season of growth, and in himself as well.
This role fosters mutual transformation.
Besides honing leadership skills, Service Adventure unit leaders can gain renewed purpose, fresh perspectives and a deeper personal faith.
Leaders serve as mentors — walking alongside participants as they
- navigate faith questions
- balance work and household responsibilities
- build deep relationships in the unit and community around them
- explore their place in God’s mission through hands-on service placements
